Jacob GROSENBACH was born in Niederuala, Hessen, Germany in 1823. His wife,
Elisabeth ROHRBACH was born in 1823, also in Niederaula, Hessen, Germany.
The parents of Jacob GROSENBACH are not currently known though there are
several possibilities among the residents of Niederaula in that time period.
Jacob GROSENBACH's arrival in the United States is unknown, but it is
believed that Elisabeth ROHRBACH immigrated in 1832 with her uncle,
Johann Heinrich ROHRBACH and his family. Jacob and Elisabeth resided in
Washington, Tazewell Co., IL. Jacob GROSENBACH d. in 1902.
Elisabeth (ROHRBACH) GROSENBACH d. 1897. Both are buried in Hollands Grove
Cemetery in Washington, Tazewell Co., IL.
Jacob and Elisabeth (ROHRBACH) GROSENBACH had 4 or 5 known children:
- Henry Jacob GROSENBACH b. 1851, m. Ella Norah FICHT,
went to Nebraska
- Adam GROSENBACH b. c1857, m. Katherine STOEMER,
his sons were known to reside in
Livingston and Ford Co., IL
- Catherine GROSENBACH b. 1859, m. Conradt VAUBEL
- Elizabeth GROSENBACH b. c1862
- John GROSENBACH b. 1869, m. Sarah Ellen SCHROEN, resided
Tazewell Co., IL
There is some debate as to whether Catherine and Elizabeth are the same person.
Elizabeth appears with her parents in the 1880 census. Catherine is not listed.
The age listed for Elizabeth in the 1880 census does not match the known date
of birth for Catherine GROSENBACH.
Many descendants of Henry Jacob GROSENBACH and John GROSENBACH are
known. We also have identified some descendants of Adam GROSENBACH and
Catherine (GROSENBACH) VAUBEL.
There are very few other GROSENBACH families in Illinois. A few we have
encountered are:
- Adam GROSENBACH b. c1866 in Germany, residing in Livingston Co., IL
1910 & 1920.
- Charles H. GROSENBACH b. c1886 in IL, residing in Chicago, Cook Co., IL
in 1910.
- Ronald GROSENBACH buried in Holland's Grove Cemetery, Washington,
Tazewell Co., IL. A date (presumably a date of death) listed is 6 Nov. 1938.
His parents initials are: L. W. and H. M.
