John ESSIG was born in 1855 in Wurttemberg, Germany. He was the son of
John George ESSIG, Sr. and Christina KLINGEL. Family information
recorded by his daughter, states that he came to the United States with his
parents and a sister, Mary, when he was only 6 months old. He married
Caroline KOCH, and settled in Washington, Tazewell Co., Illinois.
Caroline (KOCH) ESSIG died in 1899 after having 3 daughters. John ESSIG
then married Elise ESSER and fathered 2 more daughters and 4 sons.
John ESSIG died in 1933. Elise (ESSER) ESSIG died in 1976.
John ESSIG, Sr. died on the voyage to America. Information recorded by
the family notes that the ship sprang a leak and and all the men had to
pump to keep the boat afloat. John ESSIG, Sr. died of a heart attack and
was buried in Ireland when the ship was able to stop for repairs. Other
passengers robbed the body of John ESSIG, Sr. leaving his widow and
children with no money. A wealthy female passenger assisted them financially,
enabling them to finish the voyage to Detroit, MI.
Christina (KLINGEL) ESSIG later married Jacob C. HEISLER. They lived
in Washington, Tazewell Co., IL.
Many members of this family are buried in Glendale Cemetery and Hollands Grove
Cemetery, Washington, Tazewell County, IL.
